Trauma-informed communication is vital to improving a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being and should be integrated into all social spaces.

Many of the communication techniques used in trauma-informed care can be viewed as traditional, common-sense manners.

To create healthy social environments:

Communicate respectfully
Be respectful of others’ life experiences- what happened to a person is not their fault
Build healthy relationships – relationships build or break us

Be an active listener
Focus on behaviors and not the person- separate behavior from person
Be aware of your body language and use proper body language
Increase your emotional self-awareness
Increase your resilience – your capacity to bounce back more quickly after stressful events
